LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC – On Sunday, 39-year-old Raymond A. Geiger of Irmo died in a hit-and-run accident. The incident happened on Lake Murray Boulevard.
Coroner Harry O. Harman said that Geiger was walking on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo; it was about 10:36 p.m. when Smith’s car hit him. He was pronounced dead at the spot.
Irmo police told that 46-year-old David Lee Smith, of Shoalwood Drive, Lexington, was driving his 2006 Land Rover LR3 eastbound on Lake Murray Boulevard and at the same time, Geiger was walking westbound on the sidewalk. Smith was drunk; his car got out of control and hit Geiger.
Two witnesses present at the scene of the incident told the police that before the collision, the suspect’s car was weaving across the road.
Irmo police arrested Smith and also charged him with DUI. According to the Irmo police, the speech of the suspect was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. Smith was denied bond.
He is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
The Irmo Police Department and the County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident with the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team.
